Best Ergonomic Position for Reading — 7 Facts You Can Not Ignore


Bookish or book lover or hater or whatever you're, if you read book for quite a long time, you're going to experience bit of a stress. Your book might be able to refresh or entertain your mind a bit, but nothing will be handy to reduce your physical stress.

You may have the best reading chair at home, but if you want to reduce your stress and experience a bit more comfort while reading you need to maintain the correct ergonomic position for sitting.

Besides providing good and comfortable reading experience, good ergonomics can also help you achieving more interest in reading.

So here are 7 important ergonomics facts you should consider while sitting and preparing to read a favorite piece of yours.­­

1. Sit up straight:

You need to put as less pressure as possible on your lower back while sitting. And to do this, you need to keep your spine straight.

And to keep your spine straight, you need to follow the right sitting position on the chair. First place your lower back side against the intersection, where the back of your chair meets with the seat. And then your tailbone will be straight beneath your spine, therefore your whole spine.

In the beginning, you may find it a bit difficult to maintain the straightness. But gradually, you'll get used to it. So, what you need to do is, simply sit in the chair properly and then try to keep your spine as straight as possible.

2. Don't move your head:

You should not move your entire head while reading. You should move your eyes to read from line to line instead. And the reason is - you need to keep your neck and spine properly aligned with each other.

And you may encounter a severe neck strain if you tilt your head at an angle before the deliberate stretching out of your neck. Also, you may experience bit of light pressure on your back.

Finally, to keep your head static, you can use a headrest or a head cushion on your chair.

3. Rest your elbows:

While holding the book up a little beneath your eyes, you need to keep your elbows bent. Or if you're holding the book down near your lap, it will strain your neck and upper neck muscles.

So to read properly and for a long time, simply try to keep your elbows on a table or on armchairs. And keep the book either on the table or keep it in on one hand or grab it by both hands while arms are resting on the armchairs.

Also, you can try resting your elbows against your side and bring the book this way slightly closer to your eyes.


4. Position your feet:

You have to sit on a chair and keep your knees at a 90-degree angle. Also while maintaining the angle, you need to make sure that your feet are resting flat on the floor.

And remember, if your feet can't touch the floor, then it won't be easy for you to maintain proper ergonomic position.

So to maintain the ideal position, you need to have your chair and table adjusted with proper height.

5. Pull your feet up:

Although it is suggested to keep your feet flat on the ground at a 90-degree angle while sitting to read a book, you may find it hard to keep your spine straight. In this case, you can pull your feet up slightly.

You can grab a small tool or ottoman and place it under the table for resting your feet on it.

This will allow you to raise your feet 6-12 inches (15-30cm) off the ground. And you are expected to keep both of your feet flat on the surface of the ottoman or small tool.

6. Use your cushion:

While sitting on a chair, the use of a cushion can add up more extra comfort. If you set it on your lower back then you'll feel more comfort and bit of an extra support in the lower back side.

Also, a cushion helps, when you're sitting for a long period of time and your back gets sore.

So ultimately it's better to use a cushion. And if you don't have one, you can try to use a rolled up towel instead.

7. Don't lean forward:

The last but the most important fact is - don't lean forward while you're sitting and reading. And why is that - because it will pressurize your lower back. Also it will reduce the circulation of your legs.

So you should always try to not to lean forward. And better to keep your feet slightly elevated to do this. Elevated feet will restrict you from leaning forward while sitting.
